How do I become an independent student?

Independent Status

Your FAFSA will determine your status based on specific questions determined by law each year. You are currently considered by the Dept. of Education to be independent if you meet one of the following qualifications:

  • you are turning 24 during the current award year; or
  • you are married; or
  • you are working on a Graduate/Professional level degree; or
  • you are active duty military; or
  • you are a military veteran; or
  • you have children whom you support more than 50%; or
  • you have legal dependents whom you support more than 50%; or
  • you are an orphan, ward of the court, or in foster care; or
  • you are an emancipated minor as determined by a court in their state of residence; or
  • you are under legal guardianship as determined by a court in their state of residence; or
  • you are an unaccompanied youth as determined by their high school; or
  • you are an unaccompanied youth as determined by the United States Dept. of Housing and Urban Development; or
  • you are at risk of homelessness

You must meet one of the above qualifications in order to be determined independent for purposes of financial aid. If you have questions about your dependency status, please contact the Office of Financial Assistance immediately.
